BirdSleuth Girl Guides and Boy Scouts

Bird Watching, Citizen Science, Youth Group

Grenada Fund for Conservation Inc. (GFC), funded jointly by BirdsCaribbean and the Sandals Foundation, hosted two local youth groups for their own BirdSleuth workshops.

On Saturday 24th February 2018, 25 members of the Grenada Girl Guides Association gathered at the National Stadium to learn about birds, our impact on them, and basic bird identification skills. The weather did not permit us to take our planned field trip to Woburn and the Rex hotel, but we wandered around the Stadium grounds and were able to spot over a dozen species of birds.

The second workshop was held on Friday 21st July 2018, for the Scout Association of Grenada. 20 members gathered at the Presentation Brothers' College, and the curriculum for the day was similar. However, we accomplished something further for bird conservation: the construction of 14 bird nest boxes.

These boxes were designed for house wrens and other small passerine species, and were built to facilitate research into bird breeding habits by local and visiting ornithologists. The help of Wildlife in Grenada (WINGS), a group of graduate and post-graduate researchers from the University of Manitoba in Canada, was invaluable in seeing these boxes to completion. The nest boxes will be installed in the coming months and monitored jointly by WINGS, ECO at SGU, and the Forestry department of the Ministry.
